MCA Adam Yauch RIP
I read today MCA passed away and am kind of in disbelief. He and the other Beasties and Dave Scilken (RIP) helped me get my start in the very beginning of my career and I'll never forget it. His contribution to Hip Hop music and culturally for my generation has had huge and positive impact I hope reverberates forever. Here's to the Rhymes beats and turning things on there head with a sense comedy and & humanity.

Yorgo
Cristin Tierney is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Yorgo Alexopoulos entitled Transmigrations. This is Alexopoulos' first show with the Gallery.
For this exhibition Alexopoulos will present an ambitious video installation comprised of twenty-four flat screen monitors installed on three of the gallery walls. A digitally animated metanarrative will unfold across an array of video screens augmented by sound effects and an original score. This immersive environment will take the viewer on a journey through a series of distinct visual chapters that explore our collective connection to nature, folklore, myth, magic, and things larger than the self. Alexopoulos produced and juxtaposed his own original artworks, including photos, paintings, graphics, and live action video with adapted images that are rooted in symbolism to create this unique art experience.
Using the classic modernist grid as a compositional grounding, Transmigrations is a time-based digital tapestry of abstract and representational images. The work utilizes structures that were first embraced by the constructivists, while it is akin to the dynamism of Moholy-Nagy's kinetic sculpture, Light Space Modulator from 1930. There is no algorithm or automated component that drives the technology behind the work. Rather, Alexopoulos creates his animations in real time making finalized decisions, using techniques and strategy he developed early in his career as a painter. His work is stylistically and intrinsically inspired by Jennifer Bartlett's Rhapsody, a 987- enamel plate installation from 1976. Alexopoulos' hypnotic work is also informed by the tradition of early landscape painting and a sense of the sublime. Moreover, a part of the artist's inspiration for this work stems from his belief that there is a innate benefit derived in the contemplation and reverence of nature and all aspects of our universe that are beyond our understanding.
Yorgo Alexopoulos lives and works in New York City. His work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the USA. Most recently his multi-channel digital animation, No Feeling Is Final, was on exhibit at the Torrance Art Museum, in California, and a unique architecturally site-specific version was commissioned by the Art Production Fund for the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas.

Supe is one of the freshest graffiti writers that's been putting it down in Paris for a minute now. He's a sick all-around writer, especially known for his funky pieces. Supe's style has a clear old school New York influence a la Reas and Amaze. Check out this video that goes behind the scenes in his studio and captures some vividly creative blackbook pieces being created. This video was posted by Bates on his blog on 12ozProphet."Everyone's favorite Parisian, Supe, aka Le Team Manager, let's LRG into his studio for some black book sessions. Black books have served as the traditional sketch book for writers since the first days of graff and Supe has been at them since he was first introduced to graffiti. He has been painting in the streets since the early 90's and over the past years has begun to bring his work into the galleries, most recently with Lieu 37 in Paris. Supe continuesly produces many zines each year and a limited edition book "Le Team Manager" was released through Classic last year. Along with Diego, Supe is a founding member of FMK crew." -Bates

Chris Johanson Jo Jackson Mural
Today whilst downtown I happened upon what I initially thought was a bit of street art randomly placed on the street, a lone piece of plywood with some really great faces painted on it. I snapped the pic below and went back around the block for another look and realized it was part of an installation taking up the entire block and immediately recognized it to be the work of Chris Johanson and Johanna Jackson. I knew that he was working on a mural project in town and made the connection. It was really great to see this project as it was being installed and seeing the smiling faces of people passing by noticing it. I talked a bit to the construction workers installing it and was happy to find out it was making them smile as well.
[ED. NOTE: Just found out more information about this project which makes it even MORE AWESOME from Chris' assistant and project coordinator, Crystal Baxley:
Billions and Billions of People brought together professional artists and transitory youth to create a mural that highlights the diversity of life around us in a positive, creative way. Conceived of by internationally renowned artists Chris Johanson and Johanna Jackson and supported by TMT Development Company, the artists created a structure for the homeless and at-risk youth supported by New Avenues for Youth and Portland-based artists to come together to laugh, learn, paint, and share their energies to collaborate on this colorful creation. ]

JOSÉ PARLÁ Character Gestures
Los Angeles, CA - OHWOW is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new work by José Parlá, titled Character Gestures, open September 9th through October 22nd, 2011. Comprised of paintings, mono-transfers and installations, this exhibition builds on the artist's earlier work that dealt with the concept of psychogeography and depicted distressed architectural surfaces layered with calligraphic text. While he continues to broach the idea of how we experience urban landscapes and the visual language of mark making, the shift within Character Gestures stems from a deeper engagement with process and abstraction.
The notion of "character" is as much about text, integrity, and specific traits, as it is a literal nod to Parlá's performance, wherein he assumes the role of hypothetical pedestrians who interact with marred city walls, as he creates the work. "Gesture," encompasses the ideas of movement, communication, and demonstration, and is mutually respectful of the artist's accidental and calculated actions when applying medium to surface.
With Parlá's new paintings, as seen in No Return, Here Again, 2011, marks mix with textures, bright colors, and media, yet the process is as involved and significant as the visual outcome. Additionally, a large-scale installation fills the central gallery space - the freestanding sculptural translation of classroom memories opens a conversation with the surrounding paintings. In a collection of work on paper, which Parlá refers to as "mono-transfers," he experiments with a form of frottage, documenting his new paintings via the impressions they leave on paper.
Character Gestures exemplifies Parlá's deftness at technical execution; the complexity of layering, combined with erasure, still manages a translucent effect. His fluency in visual communication is mindful of the fact that any emotion or memory that attempts physicality can only serve, in reality, as an abbreviation of its original essence. He mitigates this condition through his poetic and individualized form of aesthetic dialogue, while navigating the art historic doctrine of Abstraction.
José Parlá studied fine arts at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, and The New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida. His work has appeared in exhibitions in London, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Sydney and Paris. Character Gestures is his first solo exhibition at OHWOW, and a catalogue will be published in conjunction with the show. Parlá's monograph, Walls, Diaries, and Paintings (2011), was published by Hatje Cantz for the occasion of his solo exhibition at Bryce Wolkowitz gallery in New York. Parlá currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Some Opening Pictures "Pretty on the Inside"
"Pretty on the Inside"
"Pretty on the Inside" Group Show
Paul Kasmin Gallery presents the exhibition Pretty on the Inside, organized by Erik Parker and KAWS. This is the first time that the two artists have collaborated to organize an exhibition. Pretty on the Inside includes works in a range of media by seven American artists: Todd James, KAWS, Tony Matelli, Erik Parker, Joyce Pensato, Peter Saul, and Karl Wirsum. At first glance, these artworks challenge the viewer through their visual intensity, but upon closer inspection, they reveal an inner beauty. Many of the artists included make ironic or subversive works, hijacking the language of cartoons and comics to both celebrate and criticize contemporary culture.
Todd James (b. 1969) makes large-scale installations, drawings, animated videos, and gouache paintings that appropriate the style of Saturday morning cartoons to make social and political commentary. KAWS (b. 1974) draws from the traditions of Pop art and Geometric Abstraction, while revitalizing the figure by altering and recombining animated forms and features to create new hybrid images.
Tony Matelli (b. 1971), known for his elaborately rendered sculptures, contributes Double Meat Head (2008)-- a compelling self-caricature rendered from various cuts of meat. In its various stages of decomposition, the sculpture is a rumination on death, decay, and rebirth. Erik Parker's (b. 1968) figurative paintings feature eye-popping colors and psychedelic designs, yet take their inspiration from Francis Bacon, Vincent Van Gogh, and Pablo Picasso. The exhibition will represent the New York premier of Parker's new high-octane take on the still life genre. Joyce Pensato's (b. 1941) expressionistic black and white canvases and charcoal drawings of bug-eyed iconic characters are the anti-Disney, where her sources are transformed into psychologically charged compositions through barrages of action painting.
Peter Saul (b. 1934) and Karl Wirsum (b. 1939) first rose to prominence in the 1960s. Saul's provocative paintings mix acid color and images of exaggerated violence and sexuality to tackle taboo topics and provide sharp-witted cultural critiques. Wirsum, an original member of Chicago's surrealist art group the Hairy Who, makes brightly hued paintings and sculptures of original characters, partially inspired by Peruvian and Mezzo-American art.

Taylor McKimens "Bubble Gum Cowboy"
Bubblegum Cowboy
June 17-July 30, 2011
Vernissage Friday, June 17, 6-9 pm
LOYAL is pleased to present New York artist Taylor McKimens' third solo exhibition with the gallery. Entitled Bubblegum Cowboy, the exhibition consists of seven large paintings. In Bubblegum Cowboy McKimens initiates us in the suburban desert of the contemporary American wild west, portrayed as an extended backyard calling to be explored. Drainage ditches, weather-worn palm trees, dusty trucks make up the playing field where young characters embark on brave endeavors in an almost Edward Hopper-esque solitude. McKimens is completely unperturbed by the messier side of things and in fact revels in the drips and oozes that are the traces of life. In the show's major work, Knee Deep, the bright, acidic-colored canvas shows a young, baseball-capped girl stymied in a ditch. McKimens creates a certain sense of no-time as if she has always been there and will always be there, contemplating her next move. Alternating between loose areas of color with atmospheric gesture and dense areas of confident line quality where even the slightest details, a fly on a shoe, a piece of trash in a puddle, are given equal stature on the canvas.

The Kaws Effect
In the back of Brian Donnelly's studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, behind three wheeled, wooden work tables and neatly organized racks containing bottles of brightly colored acrylic paint, past an array of painted canvases in different shapes and sizes, hides a four-foot-tall sculpture of Mickey Mouse. Mickey has seen better days, apparently. He's gray. And his eyes are x-ed out, as if he just drank from a bottle labeled "Poison." Donnelly, 36, who is better known by his alias, KAWS, is getting ready to haul a 16-foot-tall version of this mouse, titled "Companion (Passing Through)," from the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Conn., to the Standard hotel in New York. FACEMAKER at Royal/T L.A.
FACEMAKER
CURATED BY KATHY GRAYSON
OPENING APRIL 13th, 2011 FROM 8PM-MIDNIGHT
On Wednesday, April 13 2011, Royal/T--Culver City's playful, visually stunning 10,000-square-foot space known for its changing program of rotating curatorial art exhibits from top artists and gallerists around the world--debuts "FACEMAKER," a new exhibition curated by Kathy Grayson of New York City's The Hole that will be displayed through June 2011. Featured in the show are works from contemporary young artists including the title piece by Ben Jones, in addition to Barry McGee, Kenny Scharf, Joe Grillo, assume vivid astro focus, Tomoo Gokita, Eric Yahnker, Jane Moseley, Olaf Breuning, KAWS, Ted Mineo, David Shrigley, Shepard Fairey, Eddie Martinez, Taylor McKimens, Francine, Speigel, Avery Newman, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Robert Lazzarini, Aurel Schmidt, Kembra Pfahler, Rivas & Tullie, Aaron Johnson, Brian Belott, Matt Leines, SWOON, Allison Schulnik, Clare Rojas, Jules de Balincourt, Michael Williams, Takeshi Murata, Anders Oinonen, Justin Samson, Misaki Kawai, Andrew Jeffrey Wright, Dennis Tyfus, Katherine Bernhardt, Todd James, Matt Greene, Stefan Bondell, Spencer Sweeney, Nate Lowman, Mat Brinkman, Jakub Julian Ziolkowski, Billy Grant, Adam Tullie and FriendsWithYou. The show will explore interpretations of the most universal element of human perception: the face.
Each artist in this show finds a new way to imagine a face, whether in painting, drawing, sculpture, or video. "At Royal/T, we want to think of a different way to share the rising talents of undiscovered underground artists," says Owner Susan Hancock. "Our visitors look to us to share current art culture with them, and we feel it's important to spotlight the cutting-edge work that Kathy Grayson is doing at The Hole in New York City and the work that these young artists are putting out."
The forthcoming art installation at Royal/T will highlight the title piece, "FACEMAKER" by Ben Jones, playing on a large flat screen TV. A Los Angeles resident, Jones combines the vocabulary of video games and digital art to create playful works that blur the lines between media, and is currently working on his first television show that debuted on Cartoon Network this April 4th. The "FACEMAKER" exhibit will coincide with MoCA director Jeffrey Deitch's "Art in the Streets"--the first major art museum survey of the history of street art and graffiti in America from the 1970s to the present--at the Geffen Contemporary in April 2011, and many of the artists from "Art in the Streets" will also have works at Royal/T.
"The 'FACEMAKER' exhibit is particularly exciting and relevant because as people, we're instinctively wired to see faces in everything," adds Grayson. "Today's young artists are approaching this simple concept in a way that challenges our assumptions and makes us consider the face in new ways."
About Curator Kathy Grayson:
The former director of Deitch Projects in New York City, Kathy Grayson opened The Hole with fellow former Deitch Projects director Meghan Coleman, in June 2010 to "fill the hole" left by Deitch's move to Los Angeles' MoCA. Grayson brought a roster of contemporary artists to Deitch Projects, and The Hole's opening exhibition, "Not Quite Open for Business" displayed works in various phases of completion with pieces by over 20 artists from the community. A curator, painter, and writer, Grayson is also the Arts Editor at i-D magazine. She can be found blogging about art and graffiti at http://artfrombehind.net.
About Royal/T:
Located in Culver City, Royal/T is a playful blending of café, concept shop, and art exhibition space. The 10,000-square-foot space reflects the interior realm of fantasy that strongly influences the artists included in Owner Susan Hancock's art collection. The art space showcases curated exhibitions with a focus on Japanese contemporary art. "FACEMAKER" will be on display at Royal/T from Friday, April 1, 2011, through Thursday, June 30, 2011. The exhibit is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily, with extended hours on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. For additional information, guests can call Royal/T at 310.559.6300 and visit www.royal-t.org. sent these to me and theres more works over here http://fusegallerynyc.com/11coxgroup1/cox11.html

Artist and curator Tony Cox is proud to present the paintings of Joe Roberts and Derrick Snodgrass. He has
chosen to pair these two artists because their work is complimentary, despite the artists coming from different
backgrounds. They share a surreal world of landscapes in which the commonplace landscape is enlivened with a
twist of humor and psychedelia. While Roberts's work is more playful and Snodgrass's is more abstracted, both
artists are dispensing the same concept: making art for sanity's sake.
Joe Roberts was born in Madison, Wisconsin. Growing up, comic books were his main reading material and are
still an influence on his work. He briefly attended the San Francisco Art Institute, but claims he mostly learned
about drugs. Using anything from crayons and paint, to trash and cut paper, his work combines humor with a raw
and spontaneous aesthetic, creating a world of cartoon imagery laced with personal symbolism. Roberts has shown
in New York, San Francisco, Milwaukee and Chicago. Currently, he lives and works in San Francisco.
Derrick Snodgrass was born in Kentucky. is a self taught artist and tattoo-artist. His work has been exhibited in
San Francisco, London and Mexico City. He enjoys drawing and painting surreal kaleidoscopic landscapes, as if
seen from the passenger window on a trip to a fantasy world of somnambulation. Previously situated in the Bay
Area of California, he currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.
Curator, Tony Cox was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He spent 15 years of his life as a continental drifter, living
in California, New York and Spain. During this time he took photos, collected materials unique to their origin and
applied hand embroidery to create assemblages he refers to as "recycled relations." Cox recently had his debut
solo show "White Thrash mystic" at 211 Elizabeth St in New York. He has also shown at American Fine Arts,
Deitch Projects, James Fuentes and Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico. Cox lives and works in New York City.
"Gone/Gone Beyond/Gone Beyond Beyond," curated by Tony Cox runs January 8 through January 29, 2011, at
Fuse Gallery, 93 2nd Ave (between 5th & 6th Sts, 2nd Ave stop on the F), NYC, NY. The opening reception, on
Saturday, January 8th, from 7 to 10 pm, is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Fuse

Modern art was a CIA 'weapon'
From a 1995 article in The Independent:
"For decades in art circles it was either a rumour or a joke, but now it is confirmed as a fact. The Central Intelligence Agency used American modern art - including the works of such artists as Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko - as a weapon in the Cold War. In the manner of a Renaissance prince - except that it acted secretly - the CIA fostered and promoted American Abstract Expressionist painting around the world for more than 20 years."
